WHY INVEST IN LISBON MAIN STREET?
The economic development work of a Main Street program is a grass roots effort.
It needs the resources of its community – financial and volunteer time.
This is not a new or radical notion. Communities in New England have been thriving this way since the country began – with the investments of those who know the community and care about it.
Lisbon Main Street is a part-time program with an annual budget of approximately $35,000. Of that, the taxpayers of Lisbon provide about one-third. The remainder is raised through private solicitation of local businesses and individuals. Occasionally there are grants to support discrete projects.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going – they roll up their sleeves and pitch in to help! And they pull out their checkbooks and provide the financial support for the work that needs to be done. That is what dozens and dozens of Lisbon volunteers have been doing since 2001.
